Monochromatic decorating is simply using different tones of the same color when decorating a room.
No, this doesn't have to mean that it's blah, not if you combine texture and architecture to create interest. But the results are elegant, soothing and relaxing. It's not a room you tire of easily as it would be if you decorate in brilliant colors.
CreativeSpaceOnline.com shows us that a one color room can be completely exquisite! Texture found in the window treatments, pillows and accessories does the trick to bring drama to the space.
SouthernLiving.com shows us that the color doesn't have to be cream or white to be monochromatic. Here they have used a cheery yellow with the same elegant results.
Monochromatic decorating can be centered around any natural color with delicious effects. The use of pale greens gives me the feeling of being in a garden while offering very calming decor effects.
When considering texture, think not only of texture you can "feel", but also texture that you cannot. For instance, the design in this duvet creates the look of texture and adds to the dimensional qualities of the room.
Gently incorporating deeper tones of the same color pallet provides the contrast. But again, they are simply different "depths" of the same basic decorating color.
Notice that the common denominator with all of these rooms is that the color scheme is totally neutral. When thinking of neutral colors, remember that greens, blues and even yellows are considered "neutral".
It's typically the colors of "nature" that conjure the feeling of comfort and relaxation.
So the next time you are thinking about re-decorating that room (no matter which room in the house it is), consider tone on tone, monochromatic decorating to create a look and feel that will warm your heart, create a sense of calm and invite Ooohs and Aaahs from family and visitors.
